Using my own domain

I would like to direct my owned Domain name to my Altervista created page/site. How do I go about doing that. I tried registering it, but it says its already owned (that's because I own it).

Basically what I want is when people type in my www.xxxxx.com I want it to go to my page.

You can't point directly the domain via an A DNS record to your webspace, the only thing you can do is to setup the external domain in order that it redirects (via an HTTP redirect) to your AlterVista website. This is also how the domain works if you buy it from AlterVista.
