Whenever I attempt to save any edits made to the html script of the index.html file I receive the message 'File index.html has not been saved. Check file permissions or those of its folder.'. I can upload files but then the option to delete them is greyed out. I'm wondering if there's anything wrong with my settings? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use an FTP client to check files and folders permissions. Files permissions should be set to 664, folders to 775.
