Ok so I'm trying to create a website (not a blog) but using AlterVista I appear to have started a blog instead. So I've continued setting this up using WordPress within AlterVista and removing any blog type elements. Am I correct in doing this or should I stop and start again with a website?? Can I still use wordpress if I want to build a site in AlterVista?

Yes, you can have a site with WordPress. You can set up a static page as a homepage in "Settings->Reading->
Your homepage displays" and just select an existing static page.
